This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard physical horror, but inside Together lies a deep meditation about how we choose to love one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when the couple move from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) body horror, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
