‘This is our spiritual home’: A multitude of Lifesavers Gather to Pay tribute to Shooting Victims.

Looking out upon the surf on Bondi shoreline, arm in arm with close to a thousand other volunteers, Lockie Cook allowed himself to experience the anguish of a local most traumatic week in recent history.

“I feel like that guard’s just dropping,” he stated.

Beach rescuers assembled by the score on the weekend to hold two moments of quiet reflection and remember those lost in the previous weekend's violence.

Infants, elders, locals and classmates clad in red-and-yellow uniforms stood together, forming a chain running from the iconic bay's northern edge to its south end.

“The key realization we've learned from this is just the depth to which this place signifies to me,” he shared.

“Here is our spiritual ground … It is crucial we come together again and truly recover.”

A Time of Silent Reflection

At the appointed hour, the two minutes’ silence was announced by a figure at the beach’s central lifeguard post, behind which had been laid bunches of floral memorials.

“Two minutes can be a an eternity but take this time for introspection,” he said.

“Hold hands with the individual next to you, shut your eyes and remember the those who are suffering so we can grow back stronger for this beach family.”

Attendees stared at their feet or to the horizon as residents, visitors and officials watched on. All that could be heard were the lapping of the sea, a single barking dog and a overhead rescue helicopter, which passed along the beachfront as the moment concluded.

Healing on the Beach

Friends and families slowly came together in an embrace and clap for their companions at the opposite end of the beach as cheers rose from the watching crowd.

This was another example of the lifesavers working to unite the area this difficult period, stated one individual, a Jewish member of the beach's north side and a first responder on that fateful day.

“Right now, I sense the care and unity,” said the participant, who requested privacy.

Having made his home in Bondi for decades, he took part in the memorial paddle on in the days after and has worked to reclaim the beach as his own.

“It was like asserting a presence, it’s healing,” he said.

The Core Principle of Lifesaving

Gene Ross, a longtime trainer, spent the quiet time next to his recently qualified son, thinking about the unity his club had shown every day since Sunday.

“Choosing to do the tragedy here … prompted Australia to rally behind the community.”

A great number of rescuers experienced a mix of emotions together as they returned toward their surf clubs and through the area where their teammates helped the injured on Sunday.

Dozens more lingered at the water's edge, ready to come to the aid of people returning to the water.

“We serve the entire community and that’s the ethos of lifesaving,” Ross said.

“This is our purpose as rescuers: we move toward the danger.”
